A Real Estate Blog by Josh and Kristi Burke at RE/MAX Innovations
Hi! We're Josh and Kristi Burke - KC Real Estate agents with a passion for homes and travel.
A little over two years ago, we were both working sales jobs on the West Coast, living day to day on a long commute, and haphazardly moving forward with our lives. Josh managed a multi-million dollar flagship shoe department for Nordstrom, and I sold digital advertising. We were happy, but we weren't fulfilled and the prospect of starting a family so far from our own sounded daunting.
Josh had been talking about getting his real estate license for years, but with the high cost of our rent, we couldn't see a way to make it work in California. Starting a business takes risks, and we were in no position to make one. One day I was walking to work after a 45 minute BART ride at 7:30 in the morning and thought, "life isn't this difficult in Kansas City..."
I called Josh that morning and told him my plan, "let's move to my hometown", I said. "Let's quit our jobs, move in with my grandmother, and work with my family in real estate...in Kansas City."
"Have you hit your head?!" He asked.
"No, I'm serious. Life could be so much easier."
And so, the decision was made. We put in our notices, sold most of our possessions, I cried a lot, and then we drove from San Francisco to Kansas City and started a totally different life.
People ask all the time about how we are adjusting. The truth is, I didn't know how tired we were! A month after getting our real estate licenses, we made our first sale, and we knew everything was going to work out.
We work every day - and we work never. That's what it feels like. It never stops, but we never stop loving it. Making a transition from selling shoes and advertising to selling houses was surprisingly easy, and better yet, we were able to bring fresh eyes, Nordstrom level service, and modern marketing solutions to our clients.
Since moving back to Kansas City, we bought our first home, became entrepreneurs, and had our first Baby Burke this January, named Bryce.
